Overview

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, a fabled ancient wonder, are believed to have been built in the ancient city of Babylon, near modern-day Iraqi town Hillah. According to Greek authors Strabo and Diodorus Siculus, the gardens were commissioned by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife, Amytis of Media, who desired her native country’s verdant surroundings. The gardens featured an intricate network of water canals and pumps, feeding trees, bushes, and flowering plants on terraced gardens. Despite being constructed on raised terraces, the gardens were a popular attraction due to their beauty and inventiveness. However, there is limited archaeological evidence to support their existence, raising questions about if the legend is purely ahistorical.
